Preparing Your Dreamhost Domain for Transfer

Thanks for choosing to move your domain name over to Brighter Vision!

Before our team can help, you will first need to log in to your Dreamhost Web Hosting Control Panel here and prepare your domain for transfer by following these 3 steps:

Step 1: Unlock Your Domain

For security reasons, Dreamhost domains are locked against transfer by default. Before you start a domain transfer, you must disable this transfer lock.

  • From the dashboard, click the Domains drop-down and then click Registrations, as shown here:

  • From the Registrations panel, find the domain you’d like to transfer. Ensure that the Locked? option for that domain is set to No, as shown here:

  • Clicking the word Yes/No changes its status. In the image above, there is no need to change it because the domain is already unlocked for transfer.
  • Note: it may take up to 24 hours for their system to recognize this change.
If you are having trouble unlocking your domain, you can reach out to Dreamhost’s Customer Support Team for assistance.

Step 2: Change Your Domain’s Privacy Settings to Public

If you are using private registration for your domain, you must disable it on Dreamhost’s end before we can start a domain transfer. You can skip this step if your domain doesn’t have privacy protection.

  • From the dashboard, click the Domains drop-down and then click Registrations, as shown here:

  • From the Registrations panel, find the domain name you’d like to transfer and check the box directly to the right of it, then click the blue Modify whois! button, as shown here:

  • The modification page shows you Privacy and Opt Out options for the domain. From here, there are 2 things you must do:
    • Privacy must be unchecked
    • Opt out must be checked
  • Both of these boxes must be checked/unchecked as described in order to get the transfer-out processed smoothly and to prevent a 60-day ICANN lock on the domain:

  • Finally, click the blue Save Registrant Contact button to save your changes:

If you are having trouble disabling privacy on your domain, you can reach out to Dreamhost’s Customer Support Team for assistance.

Step 3: Request a Transfer Authorization Code (EPP Code)

The authorization code prevents unauthorized third parties from accessing your domain. We will need this code as proof that you have already approved (authorized) the domain transfer.

  • Back in the Domains drop-down menu, click Reg. Transfer, as shown here:

  • Scroll down to the Auth Code section and click the blue Reveal Auth Code link text, as shown here:

  • Depending on what type of domain you have, you will either be able to view (reveal) your auth code right then and there, or you may instead be required to have it sent to the email address used for your Dreamhost admin account.
  • Save this code to transfer your domain to us.
If you are having trouble retrieving your transfer authorization code, you can reach out to Dreamhost’s Customer Support Team for assistance.

Next Steps

Once you have completed all of the above steps to ensure your domain is prepared for transfer, the next will be to send our Support Team an email at support@brightervision.com letting us know you are ready to proceed, and to share your domain’s transfer authorization code (from step 3) with us.

After we receive this code, we will then have all the necessary information needed to move your domain over to Brighter Vision. Once we have initiated the transfer, a member of our Support Team will reach out via email to let you know.

From here, we will keep our eyes on things and let you know if anything else is needed from your end. Otherwise, your transfer will be completed within approximately 7 days from the date we initiated the transfer.
